It is important that you have the right collar for your dog; not just the correct length, but also the correct gauge.
Sprenger measures these collars outside ring to outside ring, so the chain part is shorter than some other manufacturers. To measure your dog correctly: measure around the widest part of the head. On most dogs this is over the ears. Then add at least two inches. If you come up with an odd number, add three inches. When in doubt, always add more. Having a little longer tag end is less of a problem than having a too collar that is too small. You will need to be able to easily slide the collar on and off over the head & ears without pinching. You need to have 2-3 fingers minimum length for the tag end of a correct length collar. It's ok to be longer, but not shorter. Pick the gauge (collar width) by your dog's weight. If your dog exceeds the following weight for the gauge you order, the collar is purely decorative. By purchasing a smaller gauge than recommended, you accept that this is completely at your's/the handler's/the owner's risk.
1.5 mm up to 22 pounds
2.0 mm up to 44 pounds
2.5 mm up to 66 pounds
3.0 mm up to 88 pounds
